Whether you’ve recently been hit by a storm, or have a roof leak for any other reason, the most important thing to do is act immediately. The longer you allow a roof leak to continue, the worse it will get and the more damage that will occur to your property and valuables.

While you want to be sure to call the professionals at R&A Contracting, there are steps you can take to mitigate the leak until the experts can arrive to make repairs.

Mitigate the damage.

As soon as you realize that your roof has a leak, you will want to contain it the best you can. If you see spots where water is collecting in your ceiling, SFGate notes you can drill a holein the ceiling in the center of each water spot and catch the water with a bucket. This will help prevent further build-up, which can cause your ceiling to collapse. Be sure to shut off the electricity to the room before you begin work.

Next, be sure to move any valuable items from harm’s way. If you have furniture, light fixtures, artwork, or any other furnishings that are at risk of getting damaged by water, move them to a different room of the home. Consider putting them in storageif there isn’t enough extra space in your other rooms. If neither one of these is an option, try to cover the items with a waterproof tarpor sheeting. Getting ruined items covered or out of your home is important because you don’t want to risk harm from mold setting in, so act quickly.

Trace the source.

If you can access the attic, go in there to find where the leak is going through the ceiling. Dry some of the water with a sponge, lay a piece of old plywood or similar material across the surrounding joists, and place a bucket on the plywood to catch the water. The next step is to find the original sourceof the leak in the roof, which you can usually do by tracing along a rafter.

Put on a temporary patch.

Once you’ve found the source of the leak, spread a liberal amount of roofing tararound the surrounding area with a putty knife. Then, place a piece of shingle in the hole/gap, and spread more tar around the shingle. When it’s no longer raining, access the top of your roof, and put tar around the underside of the shingles in the area of the leak. This should serve as a temporary patch until R&A Contracting is able to come and repair the roof.

Call a professional.

Without a doubt, you should contact a reputable roofing firm like R&A Contracting to perform a quality repair. Their pros can determine whether a repair or partial roof replacement is necessary. Remember that your roof is one of the most important structural elements of your home, so it’s not something you want to neglect. If your roof is older, you might consider using this as an opportunity to get a full replacement, especially if your roofing professional recommends it.

While you’re addressing the roof leak, see if your gutters need to be professionally cleaned. Gutters are responsible for catching roof water and directing it away from your home, but if the gutters are clogged with debris, it can cause leaks and damage. It’s best to contact a quality service, which you can find by searching for gutter cleaning near me. Expect to pay between $106 and $197 to have your gutters professionally cleaned.

When you realize that your roof is leaking, act fast. Contain the leak and move any valuable items out of the area. Patch the leak, and call a roofing professional to come and provide a permanent fix. With your immediate action, you can keep your home in the best possible condition.

Jim Lowry - Bissinger's Handcrafted Chocolatier

Eric and crew were really nice to have around. They were courteous, careful and caused little if any disruption. Their work looks good too! To be honest… a good experience with a product that I initially had misgivings about. I’m a convert because of Bubba, Sam and Eric. Thank you.

Jim Lowry - Bissinger's Handcrafted Chocolatier

“I want to thank the crew at R&A for a job well done on our very leaky roof at the shop. It is certainly nice to have the drips and rivers gone from the shop when it is raining. I also wanted you to know how much we appreciated that the guys were able to stay out of our way and allowed us to do business as usual without any problems or interruptions. The roof looks great and the clean-up after the job made it so we couldn’t even tell you’d been here. Thanks for doing what you do so well!”

Jay Moore, President of Safe Way Tire and Auto Center

“My wife and I were on vacation when water pipes burst in our house. We got a hold of Craig and the R&A crew was able to start evacuating the water immediately. The best part was that they were able to start work before we even returned home. It was a very fast turnaround considering the extensive amount of water damage.”

Most impressive was the way they protected our landscaping. Really liked the way they treated me as a valued customer, even though it was only a small project.”
